‘Choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life’
Big Game
Thirty years of experience and passion means you are in the best hands with owner/operator James Gray. Perhaps the best testimonial of all are the thoughts of his repeat customers. Don’t hesitate to check them out.
The following species of big game are available: Wapiti, Red Deer, Sika Deer, Rusa Deer, Sambar Deer, Whitetail Deer, Himalayan Thar, Chamois, Goats, Wild Pigs.
The famous Red Deer thrives in New Zealand terrain and is a prized trophy by hunters across the globe. Best hunting times are between February and September (the rutting season is in April). This stag was shot by Nigel who has toured with James five times.
New Zealand’s Red Stags grow the biggest antlers of any animal in the world relative to their bodyweight – which lies between 350lbs to 500lbs (159kg to 227kg). James has a number of hunting locations available and can tailor the perfect Safari Park hunt according to individual preferences and abilities.
New Zealand is the only place in world where Thar can be hunted, because it is protected in its homeland (the Himalayan Mountains). Thar can be hunted in New Zealand all year, and during New Zealand’s winter (April-October) they carry a spectacular winter coat.
This is the ultimate New Zealand game animal – which can be hunted all year – but the recommended best times are April-July. Males and females grow horns. James has the exclusive use of an expansive private hunting area with vehicle access – rated as the best free-range chamois hunting in New Zealand. Includes cabin accommodation.
A fun ‘add-on’ to a big game hunt.
Boars can be hunted all year. There is a good selection of animals available in the wild. They can be hunted by stalking, or with the support of hunting dogs.
Goats are often a great way to shake off jetlag, become familiar with New Zealand’s terrain, and get a feel for the rifles. Ideal for the father and son hunts and located close to good trout fishing and bird hunting.
For hunters who like an adventure James Gray can take you 30km south of New Zealand’s South Island (across the Foveaux Straight) to Stewart Island for a one-week package chasing the elusive White Tail Deer. Stewart Island is 80% national park.
New Zealand has an unfortunate abundance of introduced species that are classified as pests such as Pigs, Goats, Wallabies, Possums, Hares and Rabbits. This is a highly recommended and additional experience after the thrill of your Big Game hunt.
A unique night time hunt is recommended using spotlight and thermal technology.
