The famous Red Deer thrives in New Zealand terrain and is a prized trophy by hunters across the globe. Best hunting times are between February and September (the rutting season is in April). This stag was shot by Nigel who has toured with James five times.
New Zealand’s Red Stags grow the biggest antlers of any animal in the world relative to their bodyweight – which lies between 350lbs to 500lbs (159kg to 227kg). Boars can be hunted all year. There is a good selection of animals available in the wild. They can be hunted by stalking, or with the support of hunting dogs.
Goats are often a great way to shake off jetlag, become familiar with New Zealand’s terrain, and get a feel for the rifles. Ideal for the father and son hunts and located close to good trout fishing and bird hunting.
For hunters who like an adventure James Gray can take you 30km south of New Zealand’s South Island (across the Foveaux Straight) to Stewart Island for a one-week package chasing the elusive White Tail Deer. Stewart Island is 80% national park.
